NLE2023 Projects - National Assessment

Region Project Selected Project Abstact
1 Black River Re-TyreThe overall objective of RETyre is to deal with tyres that are left on landfill. That means we want to contribute towards our eco system by reducing the level of pollution by reducing the number of tyres. We want to make our island a better island by using sustainable products which our team is producing. We expect that if we start such kind of activities, we can reduce the number of tyres which is discarded in the environment.

2 Flacq ParabootThe project examines the challenges encountered by patients with casts and foot ulcers while showering. Showering is a routine activity that can become significantly more challenging for individuals with these conditions, as it involves protecting the cast or ulcers from moisture while ensuring personal hygiene and safety. Surveys carried out to identify the difficulties and their impact on patients’ physical and psychosocial well-being. Strategies and interventions proposed to address these challenges are discussed, and waterproof shower boots are made by using plastic pollutants. Broken umbrellas, flex banners, raincoats discarded and other plastic materials collected and these materials are repurposed to make waterproof shower boots.

 3 Grand Port Parapli Parapli, a simple brand name, reminds us of the original umbrella used in Mauritius made of polyester canopy, with plastic or metal shaft and parts. But through our project, we are redefining the product by amplifying its sustainable aspect. We want people to think of their eco-friendly practices when they think of buying an umbrella. When the word parapli comes into their mind, the first thing they must think, is our Brand.

Overall Objective: Innovation while increasing awareness of Eco-Friendly Practices

Specific Objective and Product: We are a group of young leaders who wants to save the world from a growing illness caused by the increasing pollution, especially in terms of Waste Disposal. Have we ever wondered how many waterloops, tent canopies and unused umbrellas are thrown annually instead of being recycled? What we are proposing, is giving a new life, a new meaning, to these thrown away things within our umbrellas and with each product we will sell, our consumer will feel valued for making a step towards saving our Mother Earth. Not only are we suggesting using upcycled fabrics for our canopies, but we are attempting in designing our umbrella's shaft with bamboo. Additionally, a solar panel will be inculcated at the tip of the product, connecting to inbuilt fairy lights as well as phone charger substituting a power bank..

 4 Lower Plaines Wilhems Papie Latwal The textile industry grapples with a significant environmental issue: the excessive generation of fabric waste at various production stages. Factors such as inefficient processes, rapid fashion cycles and inadequate waste management contribute to pollution and resource depletion.

Even though fabric wastes are recycled in different ways, there is little accessible methods to reuse the tiny bits of fabrics. This project aims to turn fabric waste into a usable paperlike material.
Objectives of the project are to:
1. Devise a method and list all the required steps to upcycle waste fabrics;
2. Acquire the appropriate material, tools & machines for the process;
3. Create a sustainable product which will replace the usage of paper in some areas;
4. Train people to make a living out of upcycling fabric;

The fabric-to-paper recycling project has a positive impact on beneficiaries and the environment. By diverting fabric waste from landfills, it reduces environmental burden and conserves resources. The initiative fosters sustainable practices, community engagement, and job creation. Recycled fabric paper offers eco-friendly products for various applications, encouraging creativity and artistic opportunities. The project also raises environmental awareness and promotes collaboration, contributing to a cleaner and greener future.

 5 Moka Women Through Spheres
Women through spheres is a project where we, women, want to help, support, empower and help other women grow in their life. We intend to connect with the feminine side of all aspect of life.
Parents day: We plan to celebrate parents, as at times a father fulfils at times a mother’s roles.
International Women in Engineering Day: We empower upcoming and current lady engineers as engineering students, we observe that there is room for girls but due to being vastly male-dominated, they tend to avoid this field.
Focus Group Discussion about Mental Health: We train ourselves to be able to better hear and help others during their time of mental distress.
After School event: We aim to bond with children as future leaders, they too need to be heard and formed as it will be them to inherit the world, we live in.

The goal of the project is to create a widespread awareness campaign that reaches as many people as possible. The team members want to educate individuals and themselves about the signs of animal mistreatment, the consequences it has on the animals' wellbeing, and the steps one can take to intervene and help. Additionally, the project aims to collaborate with local animal shelters, rescue organizations or services, as well as veterinary clinics to provide resources, support, and rehabilitation services for ill-treated animals. Ultimately, striving to make a significant impact by reducing the number of animals subjected to neglect and mistreatment. Thus, improving their quality of life. We care for the welfare of the animals and would like to help in reducing the number of stray, ill-treated animals. We strongly believe that a platform which both share important information about how to take care of animals, contact details of services or NGO’s who help to take care of animals or may even report a case of ill-treatment or animal in danger.

The team did field research on plastic containers that can be up-cycled, feasibility study, prototype and trial, Networking with existing actors and Sponsorship, Implementation of website, financial viability and evaluation.

 7 Port Louis Cap Lor Recyclage The project aims to reduce the impact of pollution by encouraging upcycling and sorting of waste and organising clean up campaigns and workshops with the aim of sensitising the public about the consequences of their actions and at the same time provide those with less financial stability a means to earn a small revenue. Can tabs are rarely even considered a raw material in Mauritius, let alone upcycled. We, Go Green Men, are the first to bring forth upcycled can tab products which are of high value and we want to spread awareness and introduce the population to this untapped resource. From the SCAMPER technique that we learned throughout the NLE Course, we put together the concept of ELLISE- Education, Low Cost, Lightweight, Income, Sustainability, Eco-friendly which has been the key aspect of our project.

Expected Results: Organise clean-up campaigns, sensitise the public through media and in person, set up workshop to teach upcycling and how to start a small business.

 8 Riviere du Rempart Hybrid Integrated Vegetation Ecosystem - HIVE The HIVE project deals with hybrid crop cultivation which takes subsistence agriculture to a whole new level. It seeks to materialise the arsenal of benefits of hybrid crops particularly food self-sufficiency in the era of COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War disrupting global supply chains for Mauritius being a NetFood Importing Country.

The project aims to promote sustainable gardening practices by creating biodegradable planting pots primarily using banana stems, thereby reducing reliance on plastic pots and mitigating environmental impact. The objectives are:
  • Develop a prototype of the biodegradable planting pot using banana stems and assess its structural integrity and water drainage capabilities.
  • Promote awareness and adoption of the biodegradable planting pots among gardening enthusiasts through marketing initiatives.
  • Showcase the benefits of using banana stem pots in terms of plant health and environmental sustainability in comparison to traditional plastic pots.
  • Collaborate with local communities and agricultural sectors to source banana stems sustainably, fostering socio-economic benefits and sustainable harvesting practices.

 10 Upper Plaines Wilhems
Eartlery
The project endeavours to combat the pressing issue of solid waste disposal caused by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Our purpose behind this project is to raise awareness among individuals, businesses, and communities about responsible waste management practices, with the ultimate goal of minimizing the adverse impact of singleuse products on the environment.

The expected outcomes of the project include a decrease in waste generation through the adoption of zero-waste practices.

At the heart of this project is a commitment to promote continuous improvement that goes beyond traditional approaches. Through innovative solutions such as composting, responsible consumerism, and other environmentally friendly practices, the project seeks to drive a positive change in waste management. The ultimate goal is to create a cleaner and healthier environment for present and future generations, ensuring a sustainable and responsible approach to waste management for the benefit of our small island.
